'A strong brand is vital to commercial success.' Branding interview with Sophie Griffith

Question: The growth of social media has given rise to the idea of personal branding, where everyday people are encouraged to present an ‘on-brand’ identity to the world. What does branding mean in the corporate space?

Answer: Funnily enough it should be the same thing! People conflate a brand with a logo, but a true brand is as much about your personality as it is about your appearance.

In the corporate space this is especially important; a brand is what business does. A strong corporate brand has a bigger picture purpose, a set of values, a tone of voice, and a personality or archetype that humanises them. When managed well, these things will define how many areas of the business work, not just the marketing department.

Question: When it comes to branded fresh produce, which areas of branding do you focus on – are they specific to the FMCG arena, or is branding branding, regardless of industry?

Answer: In a sense branding is branding, regardless of the industry. But in a commodity category it is especially challenging to differentiate your product from your competitors, and a standout brand identity backed up by a strong strategy is the key to doing this well.

Most businesses believe their product is truly unique, and in some cases this is true. However, to the consumer that difference is much harder to identify, if they are even looking for it! In fresh produce this is a particular challenge – people don’t associate fresh produce as brands. Their starting point is that an apple is an apple.
